Mission Statement: PEP services are about empowering families to be life-long advocates for their children through education and skill building. PEP recognizes that parents are experts on their children; and must learn about disabilities, intervention needs, and how to develop a support system to meet those needs. PEP is a family of families caring, supporting and guiding one another through the challenges of raising children. When family and friends don’t understand, parents always have someone to talk to at PEP. You are NOT ALONE! All of our staff has been impacted by disability in some way and know that navigating a challenging support system alone can be overwhelming. Over the years, not only has PEP made a difference in the individual lives of families, PEP has also made a positive impact for child and family services through community collaboration, public awareness, partnering with professionals, and system advocacy efforts.
Why was your organization launched? Over twenty years ago, Nevada PEP started with a dream, a hope and a vision of what is possible for our children. Supported by dedicated professionals, our mission began with families sitting around a kitchen table looking into the future; seeing their children growing, thriving and experiencing all that life has to offer. Yet, we recognized that between dream and reality stood obstacles and challenges that would have to be overcome.
So began Nevada PEP, a family driven statewide non-profit organization, dedicated to increasing the opportunities for home, community, and school success for children with disabilities, including those who are at risk or who have serious emotional disturbance through education, empowerment and encouragement.
What are the organization’s goals for this year? Nevada PEP has three Fundamental Goals:
- Nevada PEP will be a long-term reliable statewide resource to families and the individuals who support then by providing information, support and training programs to empower them to better advocate for the needs of their children, adolescents and young adults.
- Nevada PEP will assist families and the individuals who support them to better understand the nature and needs of disabilities. Adolescents and young adults will understand their strengths and weakness and how to advocate themselves.
- Nevada PEP will conduct community outreach and public awareness activities to families, professionals, organizations and traditionally undeserved populations that directly or indirectly work with children with disabilities and their families to raise awareness of available support, link families with other families in similar circumstance, encourage community acceptance and enhance the family centered community-based service delivery.
Programs / Initiatives: Nevada PEP conducts community outreach and public awareness activities that include the annual Run, Walk and Roll Against Bullying event, information tables at other non-profit organization statewide, training’s for families and professionals and our Hand in Hand Together We Can Program.
Annual Major Event(s): The “Hand in Hand, Together We Can” appreciation program was designed to proudly recognize and honor special people who have made a positive difference in the lives of children with special needs. The program began in October 2002 when Hand in Hand forms were mailed to thousands of interested parents across the state. With each story sent to us, Nevada PEP delivered the Hand in Hand award recipient a beautiful certificate and lapel pin to display as a proud supporter of Nevada’s community of people with disabilities.
Bullying is a serious issue that faces many children in Nevada. Nevada PEP is part of a national movement that’s putting a STOP to bullying. In recognition of October being national Bullying Awareness month, Nevada PEP holds its statewide Run Walk Roll Bullying Prevention event. Teachers, parents, students, families and friends show up in droves for this spectacular statewide event.
