In this week’s edition of Ladies Looking Ahead, we’re pushing right on through the second week in August while highlighting the absolute best events for women across the country!
Monday, August 6

🎈 Birthday: Lucille Ball
🥤 National Root Beer Float Day
👄 National Fresh Breath Day
☢️ March for Nuclear Abolition & Global Survival (Livermore, CA; FREE!)
“The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age” —Lucille Ball
While everyone alive today has likely at least heard of Lucille Ball and/or the show I Love Lucy, what they may not know about ‘The Queen of Comedy’ however, is that she was the first woman to run a major television or motion picture studio!
There’s a whole lot more to her Star Trek backstory, so take a few minutes and watch the video below to better acquaint yourself.
Really, this is all-too-timely, seeing as how we just covered the Star Trek Las Vegas convention in a recent story on Instagram.
Check out our First Contact Day (April 5) Instagram story archive for more on our favorite Star Trek actresses!
Speaking of trivia…did you know? Drinking a root beer float gives you super fresh breath!
Join us in gathering important data on the subject by celebrating both #NationalRootBeerFloatDay and #NationalFreshBreathDay!
Where in Livermore? Where nuclear weapons are still made to this day: Livermore Lab
Tuesday, August 7
🎈 Birthday: Charlize Theron
😋 National Raspberries ‘N Cream Day
⚖️ Black Women’s Equal Pay Day
🔌 Unleashing The Power of Women: To Create Our Seats at The Table (August 7-9; Martha’s Vineyard, MA: $150-$250)
“Marriage equality is about more than just marriage. It’s about something greater. It’s about acceptance.” —Charlize Theron

There’ve been so many films Charlize Theron has starred in that really captivated audiences (Devil’s Advocate anyone?), but I still believe that more people need to watch her and Zach Galifianakis get weird in her guest appearance on Between Two Ferns — it’s so difficult to tell if its scripted or not, and the “sweaty thighs” banter is perfect for this heatwave.
Tuesday, August 7th is also #BlackWomensEqualPay Day — so if you do one thing on the internet — make sure to join us for 🌩️ A SOCIAL MEDIA STORM 🌩️ at 2:00 pm ET to #DemandMore at work, as a consumer & at the ballot box.
For those ladies interested in elevating their careers or businesses to the next level, the Unleashing The Power of Women retreat is taking place across Martha’s Vineyard from August 7-9th.
Because why attend a retreat if you can get there by car (???) — it’s supposed to be a RETREAT!
Wednesday, August 8
🎈 Birthday: Peyton List
🥒 Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day
🅾️ International Day Of The Female Orgasm
🎭 Ménage à Ha (San Francisco, CA; $15)
“You can’t believe in anything if you don’t know what you’re talking about. You have to educate yourself.” —Peyton List

Peyton List may only have just turned 20, but she’s already appeared in a variety of (Disney) films and TV episodes throughout her youth and has been modeling for nearly a decade.
Did we mention that Wednesday, August 8th is perhaps our favorite tongue-in-cheek day for both food and unofficial holidays?
So… hopefully your neighbors aren’t planning on combining these holidays into one — but hey — that might just be why their curtains are always drawn. 🤔
Ménage à Ha (not for children) is coming up Wednesday night in San Francisco, so keep the zucchini and orgasm jokes coming by attending this debaucherously charitable and comedic burlesque extravaganza!
Thursday, August 9

🎈 Birthday: Anna Kendrick
🍚 National Rice Pudding Day
📚 National Book Lovers Day
🎸 Lomelda & Spellling @ McEvoy Foundation for the Arts (San Francisco, CA; FREE!)
“When you grow up middle class, you just always feel like you’ve got to be working, or you won’t be able to pay the bills.” —Anna Kendrick

Oh Anna Kendrick, you (and Robert Pattinson of course) were the best part of Twilight — AND you know the value of hard work — you deserve a very Happy Birthday, with lots of sparkle! ✨✨✨
When was the last time you watched “Cups” anyway?
Since #NationalRicePuddingDay and #NationalBookLoversDay also fall on Thursday, August 9th, the undeniably best possible way to celebrate would be to sneak a tupperware bowl of rice pudding into the Fondren Library at Rice University for a “shelfie” — don’t forget to mix in a little nutmeg, cinnamon, and/or raisins for the ultimate mid-library rice pudding sesh!
West coast ladies looking to take in a free concert on Thursday night, if only for the sake of it being summer in the city, needn’t look any further than the sweet electroacoustic sounds of Lomelda and the experimental pop-scapes of Spellling coming out the Dogpatch district of San Francisco.
Should those very same ladies wish to explore a deeper meaning of these sounds, The McEvoy Foundation was clever enough to coordinate the concert as an expansion upon the film motifs and cultural themes explored in their summer exhibition, Ragnar Kjartansson: Scenes from Western Culture.
Friday, August 10
🎈 Birthday: Kylie Jenner
🍫 National S’Mores Day
😴 National Lazy Day
📈 How to Boost Social Media Traffic Seminar (Vancouver, WA; $25)
“If you’re different, or if you think something about you is just weird and out of the ordinary, I just think that’s so dope.” —Kylie Jenner

What constitutes a perfect day?
How about a) it being your birthday, on a Friday and b) laying around being lazy, eating s’mores.
If your name is Kylie Jenner and that’s how you choose to spend your day on August 10th, you’re absolutely killing it… and with billionaire status, by age twenty.
Should your name not be Kylie Jenner, we think you’re much better off spending your day in Vancouver, WA figuring out why you’re getting likes on social media, but very few other results from your posts.
Veronika Noize and the DIY Marketing Center will be tackling these challenges head-on in this seminar starting at noon, so get there and get ready to boost your website traffic!
Saturday, August 11

🎈 Birthday: Viola Davis
🥪 National Panini Day
🎳 National Bowling Day
🎤 Writers With Drinks featuring Margaret Wilkerson Sexton (San Francisco, CA; $5 to $20, no-one turned away, all proceeds benefit local non-profits.)
“Do not live someone else’s life and someone else’s idea of what womanhood is. Womanhood is you. Womanhood is everything that’s inside of you.” —Viola Davis

If anyone knows anything about womanhood, it’s Viola Davis.
I mean, c’mon… did you see her in Fences? Wow.
And to top all of her womanhood off — Ms. Davis was the first black actress to be nominated for three Academy Awards, winning one, and is the only black person to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting (an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony) — a very Happy Birthday to you Viola!

Now, you may have heard of Bowling for Soup and Bowling for Columbine, but have you heard about ‘Bowling for Paninis’?
Well then, let me tell you all about it!
For starters, ‘Bowling for Paninis’ can only happen when the second Saturday in August falls on August 11th, which last took place in 2012 and won’t happen again until 2029.
If that’s getting too weird for you, why not spike your Saturday night with something hyperbolically regular, like San Francisco’s longest-running spoken word series, Writers with Drinks?
This show welcomes special guest, Margaret Wilkerson Sexton, author of A Kind of Freedom (a 2017 National Book Award Nominee, a New York Times Notable Book of 2017 and a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice).
MC Charlie Jane Anders also welcomes to the stage, Hannah Pittard, author of The Fates Will Find Their Way.
Speculative fiction authors Cassandra Khaw (A Song for Quiet), Marlee Jane Ward (Welcome to Orphancorp), Jack Kaulfus (Tomorrow or Forever) and S.L. Huang (Zero Sum Game) also join in the fun.
Sunday, August 12
🎈 Birthday: Cara Delevingne
🍟 National Julienne Fries Day
🐘 World Elephant Day
✊ I Am – Women’s Empowerment Conference (Richton Park, IL; $35)
“My sexuality is not a phase. I am who I am.” —Cara Delevingne

Let’s not even think about wrapping things up for the week without first wishing Cara Delevingne (care-ah della-veen) a very Happy Birthday on Sunday, August 12th!
Will Cara be celebrating #WorldElephantDay on her birthday this year?
Just look at the boss elephant tattoo she flashed last year at a Save The Elephants charity dinner.
I know we haven’t talked about any events happening across the midwest yet this week, but let’s just say you wanted to celebrate #NationalJulienneFriesDay at the McDonald’s museum in Des Plains, IL.
Well…unfortunately that can no longer happen, because it was demolished earlier this year.
If you want the inside scoop on this historic location, let me introduce you to this guy 👇👇👇 for more than you ever wanted to know on the subject.
It’s going to be day of fun, lite bites, raffles, shopping, networking and empowerment under the theme of ‘Desserts & Discussions’!
Odds are that you’ll make new connections and leave feeling refreshed, re-connected and if not anything else, empowered.
Well there you have it, that wraps up this week’s edition of Ladies Looking Ahead!
